Is Capoeira used for fighting?

The answer to this question is not straightforward. Capoeira isn’t intended to be a contact sport and you should not hit your partner with your moves. Due to the fact that Capoeira is performed in pairs, it’s feasible for someone to be hit.

When you start out learning Capoeira, you’ll probably progress slow, with only a small possibility of contact during training and performances. As you become more skilled and confident, you may want to be faster. This increases the chance of contact. You would not be required to do this unless you are confident.

One reason why Capoeira has more of this risk than other dances is that it was developed as a way of secretly practicing for combat without slave masters being aware of the martial art aspects. A good approach to think about it is watch the kung fu show on stage. The purpose is to show moves , without a fight taking place.

It’s also important to note that weapons were used historically in Capoeira but aren’t employed today, unless for special ceremonies in the roda (performance circle).
