Factors We Evaluated
1. User-Friendliness
This was my most important requirement. I wanted a label maker that I could remove from the box and use immediately without the need to study the instruction manual. I also wanted the process of making labels to be as quick as it could be. There was a big discrepancy in terms of the amount of time each label maker took to print a label: one model was 15 seconds long, which is a lot when you’re waiting for a small label to print. However, the winner took just five seconds to print the same two words.
2. Quality of Design/Quality of Materials
I wanted a label maker that was not too weighty or bulky, yet felt sturdy when I held it in my hands. The high-end quality of each brand’s tape was also important to me. Certain tapes appeared glossy and sleek while others appeared matte and dull. I wanted to know if the labels were simple to use once printed, i.e. could I remove the backing paper from the labels with ease or would I require two tweezers and an flashlight?
3. Many functions
I like a basic label maker, as I mentioned in the past. I don’t want fancy templates, and I don’t need “fun” fonts. However, I may sometimes need to change font size or capitalization. I would prefer to make this change without the need to read a 20-page guide.
