Factors We Evaluated
1. User-Friendliness
This was one of the primary factor for me. I wanted a label-maker that I could remove from the box and start using it immediately without the need to go through the instructions. I was also looking for the process of creating labels to be as fast as possible. There was a huge difference in the amount of time it took each label maker to print out the label: one of them was 15 seconds long, which is a significant amount of time when waiting for a tiny label to print. The winning model only took 5 seconds to print same two words.
2. Material Design and Quality
I was looking for labels that aren’t too heavy or bulky yet feels nice and solid in your hand. I also paid attention to the tape that came with every label maker since the quality was different among brands. Certain tapes appeared smooth and glossy, while others looked dull and matte. I wanted to know if they were easy to apply once they were printed, i.e. can I peel off the paper backing of the tape label or do I require an flashlight and an tweezers?
3. Many functions
I prefer a simple label maker, as I mentioned in the past. I’m not looking for fancy templates, and I don’t need “fun” fonts, however occasionally I’d like to change the font size or the capitalization. I’d prefer to be able to do this without having to read an entire 20-page manual.
